Senior Accountant – Payroll Position Summary
Our client in Sterling Heights, MI is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant – Payroll to oversee payroll processing, financial reporting, and accounting functions in a fast-paced business environment. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing, maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations, supporting month-end close activities, and assisting with financial analysis and reporting.
Key Responsibilities
• Process weekly, bi-weekly, or semi-monthly payroll accurately and on time
• Maintain payroll records, employee earnings, deductions, and tax information
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations
• Reconcile payroll accounts and resolve discrepancies
• Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reports
• Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities
• Manage payroll tax filings, W-2s, and related reporting requirements
• Support audits by providing payroll and accounting documentation
• Review employee timekeeping records and payroll adjustments
• Collaborate with HR regarding employee status changes, benefits, and deductions
• Monitor and maintain confidentiality of sensitive employee and payroll information
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis as needed
• Identify opportunities for process improvements and increased efficiencyQualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
• 5+ years of payroll and accounting experience preferred
• Strong understanding of payroll processing and accounting principles
• Experience with payroll systems, ERP systems, and Microsoft Excel
• Knowledge of payroll tax laws and compliance regulations
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to handle confidential information professionally
• Strong communication and teamwork skillsPreferred Qualifications
• Manufacturing or corporate accounting experience
• Experience with ADP, Paychex, Kronos, or other payroll software
• Experience with general ledger reconciliations and financial reporting
• CPP certification is a plus
