Position Summary
The Vice President of Finance serves as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and is responsible for strategic financial management, oversight of day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, and fiscal leadership for the organization and its subsidiaries. The role includes a strong focus on financial integration, reporting, and support for affiliate organizations, ensuring the financial health and sustainability of the entire enterprise.
Position Abilities/Competencies:
Strategic Leadership & Financial Planning
Advise the President/CEO and Leadership Team on financial strategy, long-range planning, and sustainability
Provide financial analysis and guidance on all activities, plans, targets, and business drivers
Lead the development and monitoring of the annual operating and capital budgets
Create rolling financial forecasts and scenario models to assess the financial impact of strategic decisions
Serve as a financial liaison to the Board of Directors and Finance & Audit Committee, preparing regular reports and presentations
Actively participate in organizational strategic planning and implementation of enterprise-wide initiatives
Financial Operations Oversight
Oversee the accounting function across all entities, including day-to-day supervision of the Assistant Controller and Bookkeeper
Ensure timely preparation and accuracy of monthly financial reports, budget variance analyses, and balance sheet reconciliations
Maintain a strong system of internal controls and ensure adherence to GAAP and regulatory standards
Oversee cash flow and liquidity management to meet organizational and subsidiary needs
Monitor banking relationships and investment accounts to optimize financial performance
Monthly reporting to the departments, as well as mentoring personnel in Program and Mission Engagement on accounting functions and budget awareness
Audit, Tax, and Compliance
Coordinate annual GAAP audit, 401(k) compliance audit, and tax filings, including 990s for all entities
Serve as point of contact for external auditors and tax professionals
Ensure all filings, disclosures, and registrations are completed in a timely and compliant manner
Monitor compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, including those related to grants and contracts
Subsidiary & Affiliate Financial Oversight
Provide financial leadership and reporting for multiple affiliated Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) organizations, including but not limited to: BBBS of Greater Cleveland, BBBS of East Central Ohio, BBBS of South Central Ohio
Prepare and present financial reports at each subsidiarys board meetings; advise on financial status, risks, and recommendations
Partner with subsidiary CEOs to develop and monitor annual budgets and ensure alignment with organizational goals
Oversee financial reporting and grant compliance across subsidiaries, ensuring timely submissions and reconciliations
Support subsidiaries with cost analysis, cash management, forecasting, and long-term planning
Serve as primary finance liaison to affiliate leadership for financial training, issue resolution, and systems alignment.
Monitor intercompany transactions and ensure proper reconciliation across entities
Presents financial reports at hub affiliate board meetings
Continuous involvement in grant compliance including but not limited to submission and reconciliations
Grant and Contract Oversight
Provide fiscal leadership for grant budgeting, compliance, and reporting across all entities
Collaborate with the Grants Manager and affiliates to ensure accurate grant allocations, expense tracking, and audit readiness
Ensure allowable costs and compliance with federal/state/local requirements
Leadership & Department Management
Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team to ensure high performance and succession planning
Promote a culture of transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement
Ensure cross-training and knowledge sharing between staff to build departmental capacity
Foster collaboration between finance and other departments to enhance financial literacy and decision-making
Human Resources/Payroll
Oversee all payroll operations to ensure accurate and timely processing
RequirementsPosition Requirements
Education: Bachelors degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field required . CPA designation strongly preferred . Masters degree in business administration, Finance, or related field preferred
Experience: Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, including at least 5 years in a senior-level finance role (e.g., Controller, Director of Finance, VP of Finance) . Experience managing complex accounting operations, including multi-entity or affiliated organizations . Demonstrated experience with nonprofit financial management, including grant compliance and fund accounting . Proven track record of managing financial audits, tax filings (including Form 990s), and external financial reporting . Prior experience supporting executive leadership and working with a Board of Directors and Finance Committees . Experience with ERP systems and financial software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar) . Experience with mentoring and managing finance teams
Skills/Abilities: Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and regulatory compliance . Advanced analytical, forecasting, and financial modeling skills . Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to present complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders . High level of integrity and commitment to ethical conduct . Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt in a fast-paced, evolving environment . Strategic thinker with a hands-on, collaborative approach to problem-solving .
