Our businesses are vertically integrated with operations spanning cultivation, processing, and retail. We aim to deliver premium cannabis products while maintaining the highest standards of compliance, operational excellence, and financial stewardship. Position Summary The Controller is a hands-on finance leader responsible for managing all accounting operations, financial reporting, and consolidations across our multi-state cannabis operations. This role requires strong technical accounting skills, multi-entity close experience, tax expertise, and deep knowledge of inventory valuation. The Controller will build and lead a small finance team while maintaining direct involvement in technical accounting matters and month-end close processes. Key Responsibilities Accounting Operations & Financial Close Manage month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes for multiple entities Prepare consolidated financial statements across all state operations Ensure accuracy and timeliness of all financial reporting Oversee general ledger maintenance, journal entries, and account reconciliations Review and approve complex accounting transactions and entries Manage multiple entity cash positions, payables, and receivables Manage inter-company eliminations and corporate consolidation Implement and maintain internal controls and SOPs for accounting processes Coordinate with Plant Controller/Sr. Accountant on entity-level financial reporting Tax Compliance & Planning Oversee preparation and filing of federal and state tax returns (income, sales, excise) Manage Section 280E tax calculations and compliance Coordinate with external tax advisors on complex tax matters Ensure proper tax provisions and deferred tax calculations Monitor tax law changes and assess impact on operations Manage state and municipal-specific cannabis tax reporting requirements Support tax audits and regulatory inquiries Inventory Accounting & Valuation Oversee inventory accounting across cultivation, processing, and retail operations Ensure proper inventory valuation using appropriate cost accounting methods Manage cost of goods sold calculations and inventory reserves Reconcile physical inventory counts to book records Analyze inventory turnover, aging, and shrinkage Coordinate with operations on standard costing and variance analysis Ensure inventory tracking system data integrity and reconciliation Financial Reporting & Analysis Prepare monthly financial reporting packages for executive team Analyze financial results and provide variance explanations Support budget preparation and forecast processes Prepare financial reports for lenders, investors, and board of directors Develop and monitor key financial metrics and KPIs Identify trends and provide actionable insights on financial performance Team Leadership & Development Lead, mentor, and develop finance team Assign responsibilities and oversee team workflow and priorities Conduct performance reviews and provide coaching Foster a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement Regulatory Compliance & Controls Ensure compliance with GAAP and cannabis-specific accounting requirements Maintain compliance with state and municipal regulations Prepare for and manage external audits/reviews and regulatory examinations Implement and monitor internal controls over financial reporting Manage banking relationships and cash handling procedures Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable processes Systems & Process Improvement Optimize ERP systems and accounting software for efficiency Implement automation to streamline accounting processes Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures Lead system implementations and upgrades Required Qualifications Education & Certification Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required CPA license preferred MBA or Master's in Accounting preferred Experience 7-10 years of accounting experience with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role Hands-on experience closing books for multiple entities and preparing consolidations Strong technical accounting background with multi-entity consolidation experience Tax compliance and planning experience, including corporate income tax and sales/excise tax Expertise in inventory accounting and cost accounting methodologies Experience in regulated industries; cannabis industry experience is a plus Public accounting background (Big 4 or regional firm) preferred Proficiency with QuickBooks Online Experience and comfort level learning new systems (Metrc, Apex, Flowhub, Distru) Core Competencies Advanced Excel skills Hands-on approach with willingness to perform detailed accounting work Strong technical accounting skills and problem-solving abilities Excellent attention to detail and accuracy Ability to work in fast-paced, high-growth environment Strong leadership and team development capabilities Excellent communication skills Process improvement mindset What We Offer Competitive salary: $140k - $170k based on experience Bonus eligible Comprehensive benefits: health, dental, vision PTO Powered by JazzHR 4ezGqPDyDc
