This Internal Auditor I is responsible for conducting internal audits across operational compliance, financial, information systems, and investigative areas within the NC Department of Public Safety.

The position ensures efficient achievement of audit objectives, addresses pertinent agency risks, monitors engagement time and budgets, and adjusts audit procedures as necessary in consultation with Audit management.

Independent judgment is utilized in analyzing and interpreting internal auditing standards, laws, policies, and other relevant information to ensure accuracy and adherence to standards. Duties include applying knowledge of statutes and departmental operations, using computers and internal audit techniques, reviewing and evaluating gathered information, verifying transactions, developing working papers, and making recommendations based on evidence.

This position formally reviews and analyzes Department of Public Safety operations and internal controls and is responsible for audit reporting. Position documents audit findings and communicates results in oral and written reports/presentations to management. Position is responsible for preparing documentation in accordance with standards, reporting audit findings accurately and promptly, reviewing supporting materials, preparing financial statements, complying with time and budget requirements, and communicating results to management through oral and written reports.

Operating independently with general guidance from the Audit Supervisor, Audit Manager, and Audit Director, this role adheres to the Internal Professional Practices Framework (IPPF) issued by the Institute of Internal Auditors.

This position is expected to become knowledgeable and comply with NC DPS Internal Audit SOPs. This position is expected to attend all designated training courses and seminars.

Salary Recruitment Range: $47,703.00 - $60,000.00

The work schedule is Monday through Thursday (10 hours per day). We value our employees and are committed to providing flexibility in work schedules. This position qualifies for teleworking on a part-time basis as part of the State Telework Program.

DPS uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals.

The Minimum Education and Experience (E&E) is REQUIRED to qualify for this position. Management Preferences, including Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs), are not required but may be used to determine the pool of most qualified applicants. Management Preferences

  • Experience conducting a variety of internal audits, including compliance, operational, information systems, financial, performance, investigations related to fraud, waste or abuse, and/or special reviews.
