Position Focus

Established in 1908 and with more than 7,500 books in print, the Press is one of the oldest and largest American University Presses, and the only American university press with a full-scale publishing operation in Europe. The Press publishes books, many of them award-winning, that further scholarly investigation, stimulate public debate, educate both within and outside the classroom, and enhance cultural life.

The Publishing Accounting Manager has prime responsibility for cost accounting, grant accounting, fund accounting, and financial analysis, including supervising the Press $15 million operating expense budget. This position is highly collaborative and analytical with the ability to drill down into financial details to identify red flags, risks and opportunities.

Responsible for providing financial information through interpretation, analysis, reporting, and reconciliation of data. Converts financial data into useful information to guide University and unit leadership in making informed decisions. Performs complex reconciliations and ensures compliance with accounting principles, university policies, and federal and state regulations. Recommends improvements to systems, methods, practices, policies, and procedures. Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to ensure financial integrity and compliance, and provides guidance and support to less experienced team members.

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Well-developed organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast- paced environment. Ability to supervise and train junior staff, including student workers.

2. Strong understanding of general accounting principles and financial management, including journal entries, cost transfers, and reconciliations.

3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups and provide high-level customer service.

4. Ability to exercise independent judgment, maintain strict confidentiality, and demonstrate initiative in problem-solving.

5. Demonstrated proficiency with computer applications, especially Excel, and financial reporting systems.

Preferred Education and Experience

1. Four years of accounting; experience in a publishing, manufacturing or production environment providing financial reporting support to staff and authors.

2. Experience with university financial systems and knowledge of institutional financial policies and procedures.

3. Strong analytical and problem-solving experience with resolving royalty recipient queries.

4. Prior experience in a higher education or publishing setting, providing financial reporting support to faculty, staff and authors

Principal Responsibilities

1. Financial Analysis and Reporting: Analyzes and synthesizes information and designs and creates accurate and timely reports that add value to the management of University operations. Advises and applies GAAP to specialized areas to properly report out on financial conditions. Designs financial reporting to meet the compliance needs of internal and external users. Extracts and consolidated data from multiple sources. 2. Financial methods & systems: Contributes to the planning and improvement of practices, processes and systems. Collaborates with all levels of internal and external contacts to carry out department goals. Provides a high level of service that cultivates and maintains strong working relationships and effectively communicates information; takes ownership and accountability for timeliness, accuracy and relationship management. 3. Accounting and Reconciliation: Accurately records enterprise or subsystem transactions and verifies other entries are recorded correctly to ensure accuracy of balance sheets, income statements, and other financial activities. Performs complex multi-system reconciliations; navigates through multiple complex systems and reporting tools to independently investigate and resolve routine and non-routine discrepancies. Applies and adjusts entries to the general ledger or subsystems and ensures adherence to GAAP, regulatory requirements and financial reporting considerations. Communicates effectively at all levels and applies sound judgment when handling sensitive information. 4. Strategic Resource: Translates department finance goals into objectives. Identifies, and raises potential financial opportunities, issues, risks, ideas and solutions. Identifies the appropriate stakeholders to include in consultations, communications, approvals or buy-ins for designing and implementing changes. 5. Compliance and Risk Management: Establishes, implements and/or maintains strong internal controls in areas of assigned responsibility to provide reasonable assurance of effective and appropriate resources use, accurate financial information, and adherence to contractual obligations and agreements, policies, procedures, and external regulatory requirements. 6. Mentors, leads and/or supervises staff. 7. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Bachelors degree in Accounting, Business, Economics or Finance and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated application of financial, accounting and economic concepts.
