Reporting to the Director, Global Tax, the Manager, Tax Strategy & Controversy supports the development and execution of Avient's global tax strategy and management of tax controversy matters. This position plays a critical role in driving strategic tax initiatives, managing tax risk, supporting audits, and partnering cross-functionally across Finance and the broader business. The role also interfaces closely with Avient's managed services providers to support tax operations.
Essential Functions
Strategic Tax Planning
Collaborate closely with the Director to develop and execute forward-looking tax strategies that align with corporate objectives and drive long-term value
Support global tax initiatives to optimize the effective tax rate and cash tax rate
Monitor legislative changes and assess tax implications for Avient's operations
Provide support and input on matters of due diligence related to M&A transactions, as applicable
Provide support and input concerning restructuring activities
Represent Avient in cross-functional initiatives and enterprise-wide projects, ensuring alignment of tax with broader business goals
Tax Controversy / Operations Support
Support and, where appropriate, lead tax audits and controversy matters in coordination with the Director, global Controllers, and external advisors
Manage aspects of tax controversy related to strategic transactions
Partner with the managed services provider on transfer pricing compliance and documentation
Prepare tax models, technical analyses, and step plans supporting U.S. and international tax matters
Support the global income tax provision process, as needed
Education and Experience
Accredited four-year degree in accounting or related field
Certified Public Accountant, Master's degree in Taxation, or license to practice law preferred
Strong skills and 7+ years of experience in international tax and controversy, including managing tax audits
Experience with manufacturing or technology companies preferred
Broad experience with oversight of complex international tax matters for multinational companies or equivalent experience at Big Four public accounting firms
Ability to interpret and apply tax rules in relevant contexts to support decision-making and compliance efforts
Critical thinking and the ability to "own" responsibilities in a fast-paced environment focused on results
Team player with proven ability to lead and manage projects
Strong skills in getting and analyzing financial data for tax modeling (Excel)
Familiarity with SAP, Hyperion Financial Management (HFM) and OneSource
Excellent interpersonal communication skills in English (reading, writing, and speaking) with additional regional language proficiency appreciated
