Each SSC will have an assigned case load of students with one of the following: College of Arts & Humanities, College of Business and Public Management, or College of Health Sciences.

The Academic Support and Advocacy Center (ASA), a part of University College at WCU, is committed to enhancing student success by providing foundational relationships and comprehensive support that address academic, social, and personal challenges faced by first-year and transfer students. The ASA aims to foster student resilience and persistence by ensuring that students have access to knowledgeable and compassionate guidance throughout their transition to college life.

The ASA mission and purpose focuses on relationship building, holistic support and in some cases, depending on the students chosen major, registration support. SSCs foster student success, persistence, and engagement by building ongoing relationships with students, helping them navigate West Chester University, and connecting them with academic, emotional, and well-being resources throughout their transition to WCU. This relationship is formalized in the first year, and in most cases, students will transition to a faculty advisor based on their major of choice in their second year.

Via direct contact with students, the SSC offers different types of academic support services to aid students in their utilization of academic systems, policies, and structures, and, when appropriate, help students understand degree programs such as major specific requirements, and general education requirements. SSCs design and administer student engagement campaigns to remind students about responsibilities such as placement exams for incoming students and returning student registration. SSCs frequently respond to incoming requests for student support by connecting students to the resources available to support student retention. This position is responsible for understanding the student experience and identifying process improvements while promoting retention and academic success.

The ideal candidate will be deeply committed to student success, with strong communication skills, a growth mindset, and a talent for creative problem-solving. They should embrace continuous process improvement, value teamwork and shared governance, and be eager to collaborate with faculty and staff to support students.

Responsibilities include:

  • Meet with students (via a combination of in-person and virtual appointments) to discuss academic needs and the students holistic experience at West Chester University including but not limited to engagement with other students, wellness, progress in students courses, resource navigation, and, in some cases, academic requirements for degree planning and course registration
  • Support students in understanding academic and registration requirements
  • Utilize WCUs student information system, Banner, to assist with student registration
  • In collaboration with team, develop and execute student communication campaigns to help connect students to academic and registration resources
  • Utilize technology, such as the Navigate Student Success Platform, to understand student profiles and engage students
  • Utilize proactive strategies to support student registration, academic planning, and navigation of curriculums and policies via meetings, communications, and programming
  • Collaborate and communicate regularly with ASA leadership, faculty, chairs, deans, and colleagues regarding student care strategies and outcomes
  • Engage in daily communication with individual students and cohorts critical to the Universitys commitment to student success and engagement
  • Utilize student data to identify opportunities for outreach and support
  • Identify continual process improvements to the student experience using data from campaigns and other reports provided
  • Engage in continuing professional development
  • Participate in FERPA training. Promote FERPA compliance in all interactions with WCU Staff faculty, students, and families. Treat all records, data, and conversations confidentially in compliance with federal and institutional FERPA policies and guidelines
  • Engage productively in a shared governance and team-focused environment
  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required to support student events
  • This position is eligible for hybrid work but is not 100% remote

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree
  • Demonstrated experience supporting students at the college or high school level
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a student support office or student resource office college or high school level
  • Experience using software and technology when supporting student success (including but not limited to, Navigate/Early Alert systems, Microsoft Suite, student information systems, such as Banner, or a learning management systems)
  • Experience meeting diverse student needs
  • Experience with presenting to groups/public speaking

Salary and benefits are dictated by the State College and University Professional Association (SCUPA) Collective Bargaining Agreement.

This position is eligible for hybrid work but is not 100% remote.
