Position Summary
The Senior Accountant plays a critical role in our Finance & Accounting team, managing month-end close, general ledger maintenance, regulatory reporting, and internal controls for a growing credit union. This role reports to the Accounting Manager or AVP, Finance & Accounting, and collaborates across departments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and yearend close process: prepare journal entries, post adjustments, and analyze P&L and balance sheet variances under GAAP
- Manage general ledger and bank reconciliations, investigating and resolving discrepancies in a timely manner
- Prepare and analyze financial statements and management reports, offering variance analysis and
- Handle planning, forecasting and variance analysis for various functional areas.
- Support internal and external audits, exams, and testing; respond to audit inquiries with appropriate documentation and schedules
- Document, maintain, and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls, advising on risk reduction and process efficiency
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior accounting staff, cross-train where applicable, and coordinate tasks to support continuity
- Participate in special projects and cross-functional initiatives, such as process automation, systems integration, or profitability modeling
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
- 5–8+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within a credit union, bank, or similar financial institution
- Deep knowledge of GAAP and credit unionspecific accounting practices and regulatory requirements (e.g. ALLL, NCUA reporting, OFAC/BSA/AML)
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, macros) and comfort with accounting software.
- Experience with accounting and forecasting systems
- Excellent analytical abilities, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate effectively across teams
Preferred Skills & Attributes
- CPA credential or actively working toward certification.
- Experience with audit preparation, exam coordination, and regulator interaction.
- Ability to lead process improvement initiatives—identifying inefficiencies and implementing streamlined workflows.
- Cross-functional mindset: flexible, adaptable, and member-service oriented.
