Construction Accountant
Watson Civil Construction, Inc. is a heavy/highway contractor working throughout Florida specializing in large site infrastructure, underground, and road work. We are currently seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Construction Accountant to join our dynamic team. This position plays a critical role in supporting and enhancing the financial operations of the company, with a strong emphasis on cost accounting, internal audits, and financial controls.
Job Duties
Lead monthly closing activities including preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statement review.
Conduct regular internal audits of accounts payable, job costs, and compliance with internal controls, ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures.
Oversee and maintain cost accounting systems, including job costing, cost allocations, and cost-to-complete analyses for all construction projects.
Analyze and report on project costs, variances, and budget performance; communicate findings and recommendations to management.
Develop, implement, and improve budgets, accounting policies, and departmental controls to increase accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.
Prepare, import, and analyze spreadsheets, budgets, and reports across multiple software platforms.
Ensure billings comply with contract terms and are properly documented and supported.
Manage asset accounting for company fleet and equipment, including acquisitions, disposals, and depreciation schedules.
Ensure accurate recording and reconciliation of intercompany transactions with related parties.
Coordinate and review monthly cost-to-complete estimates and ensure timely, accurate reporting on construction projects.
Oversee equipment cost module and ensure proper allocation of equipment costs to jobs.
Review monthly job cost activity to ensure accuracy and consistency, identifying and resolving discrepancies.
Assist in the preparation of financial statements and management reports in compliance with GAAP.
Collaborate with the executive team to strategize and implement processes and procedures to achieve financial goals.
Interact with outside vendors, clients, and auditors as needed.
Serve as back-up for payroll administration and assist with payroll-related accounting functions.
Participate in ad-hoc projects, process improvements, and other support tasks as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
Minimum 3 years of accounting experience, with strong knowledge of cost accounting principles and functions.
Minimum 3 years of construction accounting experience, preferably with a heavy civil contractor.
Demonstrated experience with internal audits and implementation of internal controls.
Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with Office 365; knowledge of Viewpoint Spectrum or similar construction accounting software is preferred.
Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of internal and external stakeholders.
