Job Description

Join us and help one of the fastest growing nonprofit organizations with its accounting operations and financial controls. We are looking for an energetic and organized self-starter with strong financial analysis skills and attention to detail who is looking to use their skills to make a real impact. You will be responsible for the full-cycle accounting procedures for several nonprofit projects for our clients. The right candidate must have a strong understanding of nonprofit accounting practices and must be able to work well in a fast-paced environment.  We need you to be highly organized and have a demonstrated ability to manage several projects simultaneously. Our accounts payable team processes over 2,500 expense transactions a month. The work is fast-paced and mission-driven.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Various types of payment request reviews and posting expense transactions to general ledger accurately and within the payment schedule provided to MO and clients
  • Process cash disbursement via check issuance, domestic EFT/ACH transfers, and international wire transfers. And perform related follow-ups and confirmations.
  • Record journal entries for assigned client programs, projects and sub-projects 
  • Perform routine GL account reconciliations as part of monthly closing procedures for all assigned programs and projects 
  • Reconcile and process monthly credit card statements and payments
  • Respond to project and vendor inquiries related to expenses and disbursements
  • Process semi-monthly payroll and 401(k) funding for program staff; ensure accuracy and compliance with annual reporting requirements. 


Staff Management

  • Operationally supervise associates assigned to the AP process and other projects as assigned 
  • Train team and direct reporting staff on all AP processes and deadlines to ensure successful monthly and annual close 
  • Work directly with Director of Finance and Senior Director regarding AR associate personnel decisions


Other Responsibilities

  • Manage 1099 reporting and vendor records 
  • Assist in preparation of schedules to support financial audits
  • Assist with preparation of Form 990 and other tax/regulatory returns and related tax reconciliation schedules
  • Assist the team with general ledger reconciliations and special projects as needed
  • Act as backup to other staff on the MO Finance team  


To Be Successful in This Role, You’ll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or related fields
  • Three or more years of relevant professional experience maintaining books with non-profit organizations
  • Proficiency with basic Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Proficiency with accounting softwares (MS Dynamics GP)
  • Experience with full-cycle GL and AP accounting processes
  • Must have a strong work ethic, be well-organized and a self-starter
  • Strong problem-solving skills, documentation skills, data analysis, research and resolution skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, including the ability to report on complex data in an easily understandable manner
  • Ability to work independently and within teams in a fast-paced and high-volume environment with an emphasis on accuracy and timeliness
  • Ability to manage and make progress on multiple projects simultaneously  
  • Ability to perform mathematical computations such as percentages, fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division quickly and accurately
  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit and resourcefulness that spurs innovation and problem solving
  • Emotional maturity


Other Highly Preferred Skills and Experience


  • Experience in philanthropy, nonprofit management and/or business
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP
  • Experience or familiarity with Salesforce, Concur Solutions and Adobe Pro
  • Experience managing federal grants/contracts
  • Experience with lobbying rules and regulations
  • Advanced Excel skills

While this position is based in Washington, DC, due to COVID-19, Arabella Advisors remains a remote-first organization for the foreseeable future and until further notice. At this time there are zero requirements for in-office presence. To encourage work/life balance, we offer flexible work options.
