Position Overview

We seek a Controller to support our growing, privately-held business. The Controller plays a critical role in financial strategy development and implementation, and is a key advisor to executive leadership. This hands-on role oversees all day-to-day financial operations for the firm, manages financial controls and accounting activities, handles treasury and audit responsibilities, and ensures overall integrity of the company’s P&L and Balance Sheet. Must possess superior general and cost accounting skills along with strong interpersonal capabilities. Regularly interacts with executive leadership, JPA associates at all levels, clients, vendors, and other stakeholders.

Position Location and Compensation Package

Primary Responsibilities

  • Continue to evolve the accounting and finance activities to improve efficiency and productivity so the relevant information for business strategy decisions is current and readily available to the executive leadership team.
  • Ensure that financial control processes and systems comply with company policies, applicable regulations, and accounting best practices.
  • Effectively manage small accounting and office staff, including work assignments, performance management, wage adjustments, etc.
  • Develop and monitor budgets and forecasting, reporting on these regularly and suggesting adjustments as appropriate.
  • Manage payroll and AP/AR work for timely payments and cash flow needs, job costing, etc.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership, HR, and others to optimize working capital productivity and systematic control over capital, expenditures, wages, and benefits.
  • Analyze actual costs and report on variances from expected costs, understanding root cause and corrective actions for future contracts and gross profit, facilities maintenance, etc.
  • Perform Balance Sheet reconciliation/review of reconciliations for Cash/Treasury functions at the firm, prepaid expenses, accruals, and related items.
  • Serve as point person for audit prep and facilitation, track company shares and distributions,  and other relevant activities.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Five (5) or more years’ experience as a Controller with past accounting/finance experience in engineering firms, government contracting, or other relevant industry preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a comparable subject required.
  • Must have job costing background, excellent analytical skills, and a strong problem-solving capacity all paired with a sound understanding of accounting principles and government contract work.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills plus emotional intelligence, interacting effectively with people at all levels of the organization in a collaborative, team-oriented manner.
  • Possess a continuous improvement and growth mindset and demonstrated success working in a professional services firm environment.
  • Expert/advanced MS Excel and Office suite proficiency, past experience with job costing software preferred.
