Reporting into the Corporate Controller this position is responsible for managing Borgess Health (BH) corporate accounting functions including the process of preparing, consolidating, and analyzing BH monthly financial statements and other reports as requested by the Board of Directors, administrators, and Ascension Health (AH). Functions as a liaison between BH, BH entities, and AH. The Assistant Controller will work with all BH entities to ensure compliance with proper financial reporting and AH directives. This position will manage the corporate operating budget process to ensure both financial targets and timelines are met as set forth by the Board on an annual basis. This position will coordinate BH Audits as required by the Board of Directors or AH. This role will work with administrators and other BH entities on financial data analysis and planning. Supervises staff within the General Accounting department.

Position Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of accounting and management practices and principles, budget processes, and information systems at a level normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Certified Public Accountant or Masters in Business Administration preferred.

  • 1-3 years of progressive work experience in order to gain knowledge of health care trends and practices, regulations and financial techniques necessary to forecast and budget, and supervisory experience.

  • Interpersonal skills in order to communicate clearly and effectively with all customers regarding various financial information, policies and procedures.

  • Analytical skills necessary in order to develop budgets, coordinate audits, analyze financial data, produce accurate financial statements, costing data, and internal profitability reporting along with other related reports.

In this position the Assistant Controller will be responsible for the following:

  • Hiring, developing, coaching and making compensation recommendations for his/her assigned staff.  Defining individual performance objectives and development plans, and ensuring alignment with project and unit objectives.
  • Assisting departmental management on budget responsibilities by preparing forecasts, annual budgets and analyzing monthly expenses.
  • Staying up to date on changing technology and environment within company.  Using information to help set department objectives and plan for appropriate resources and budget needs.
  • Assisting in the accuracy and dissemination of information provided by the group.  Ensuring that the department provides timely and accurate information to internal (SBU's, Corporate, etc) or external (NAIC, auditors, states, etc.) customers.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective communication between Corporate and SBU functions.  Using relations to get answers to questions in order to provide useful information to management.  Increasing the scope of understanding to be in a better position to suggest more involved process improvement initiatives.
  • Driving process improvements that result in cost saving initiatives and more timely and accurate preparation of information.


Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Accounting, Finance, Business (or equivalent accounting experience). CPA preferred.
  • Requires a minimum of 10 years of significant accounting/reporting experience, ideally in the insurance/financial services industry.
  • Additionally, requires 5 to 7 years of management responsibility.
