Accountant
By analyzing revenues, costs, financial liabilities, and assets, accountants are able to calculate future cash flows fairly accurately. Financial reports such as balance sheets or profit/loss statements must be maintained and reported to administrators. The majority of an accountant’s day is spent completing or analyzing paperwork, but communication among departments is also necessary.
Accounting Manager/Supervisor
Accounting professionals must often calculate, input, and verify data on a regular basis. These managers and supervisors oversee all of these basic functions in addition to maintaining all financial records. These positions may require a great deal of time spent researching, or reviewing the work of others.
Assistant Controller
Controllers assist in leading the daily activities of an accounting organization. They are responsible for preparing, evaluating, and presenting budgets and reports directly to management. Their duties range from establishing to implementing company practices and procedures, and extensive knowledge of accounting principles is mandatory.
Auditor
Auditors are responsible for carefully analyzing reports, statements, and accounting software of an internal or external facility to ensure accurate calculations. They must have thorough knowledge of all laws and regulations relating to accounting and practices, because their job is to detect and report any discrepancies within a company’s financial records. If an error has occurred, it is their duty to trace it back to the source, and make recommendations to ensure more accurate accounting in the future.
Bookkeeper
Familiarity with standard accounting procedures is required for a bookkeeper position, due to the fact that they are responsible for recording a company’s business transactions. Bookkeepers are responsible for maintaining records within given ledgers or computer programs. They must keep accurate records and balance all reports and ledgers monthly.
Clerk
Associates planning to work their way into higher level positions often start as accounting clerks. Duties are often redundant, but allow candidates to learn the processes of an accounting office or department. Daily activities generally include ledger maintenance, and the preparation of basic financial reports.
Controller
Developing and implementing efficient policies, procedures, and practices is the main priority of a controller. They must oversee all aspects of the accounting department, such as budget or report maintenance and preparation. Once they are positive data has been compiled properly, they are responsible for presenting the data to management.
Chief Financial Officer
Immense creativity and independence is necessary for a CFO career because they are held accountable for organizing and directing their company’s overall financial policies. Insurance, tax, treasury, accounting, budgeting, and many other aspects are included in this grouping. An in-depth education of accounting practices will be needed for these professionals.
Director
Accounting, payroll, and cost accounting functions are direct responsibilities of the accounting director. They are responsible for a number of tasks and applications, so extensive education and experience is generally mandatory. They must have the capability to lead others within the department, as well as work within deadlines.
Financial Analyst
Reconciling and forecasting internal accounts is a large part of an analyst’s career. They spend an immense amount of time compiling data, ensuring accuracy, analyzing information, and creating reports. They monitor all documents and report any trends to management.
Office Administrator
The development of policies and procedures of all office activities is the primary responsibility of the office administrator. They supervise all associates and proceedings on a daily basis. Duties, including filing, typing, faxing, mailing, and dictating, are often delegated to clerks or administrative assistants. They must maintain order among all records.
Office Manager
These careers often require extensive experience and good judgment. Office managers are expected to direct the general duties of multiple business office operations. They must be capable of directing and coordinating others within their department.
Payroll Administrator
Although they focus mainly on payroll functions, a keen understanding of all accounting practices is necessary for this administrative position. Typical duties include compiling accurate records of timesheets within a software system, computing earnings, and withholding mandatory amounts such as taxes or benefits. Accuracy and attention to detail are traits payroll administrators must possess.
Payroll Specialist
Payroll specialists are often in charge of compiling timecards within a computer system, or inputting data from hard copies of timesheets or production records. They have the ability to balance payroll when completed, and ensure proper State, Federal, and local tax payments are made. Since pay is generally issued by a specific time, these professionals must be able to complete all work within a given deadline.
Principal
As the highest authority in the accounting department, principals assume numerous duties. They oversee all accounting functions from preparing reports and entering data, to collaborating with other departments and organizing special projects. Principals are commonly responsible for performing audits of departments, monitoring department workloads, and creating and monitoring databases. They handle any communication that is necessary among fellow administrators and management.
Specialist
Common duties for accounting specialists revolve around the direction and planning of financial statements, cost control systems, and ledger accounts. Basic accounting skills are mandatory for these positions, and immense organization is integral. They watch over all aspects of basic accounting tasks.
Staff Assistant
Duties are often varied for these occupations. Staff assistants may handle duties from basic administrative tasks such as filing or organizing data, to running reports. They take on more responsibilities as they gain experience, but these are generally entry level positions. An understanding of accounting principles is generally required.
Tax Specialist
It is often easier to maintain detailed tax information year round rather than attempting to organize wide-ranging information within a short period of time, so many organizations employ tax specialists year round. Their duties are not only limited to preparing tax returns and reports, but also include advising a company of the benefits or expenditures associated with particular business transactions. Specific duties often vary, depending on the type of company.
